Education secretary says admissions should be based on merit and focus should be on improving schools

The education secretary has pushed back against the idea elite universities such as Oxford and Cambridge should “tilt the system” to accept more pupils from state schools.

Nadhim Zahawi said admissions should be based on merit and the focus should be on delivering more outstanding schools.
