Raising Awareness of Disability
Cain is 21 years old. He is affected by cerebral palsy due to complications at birth. Cain cannot walk or talk. He is confined to a wheelchair and communicates using an electronic device which he controls with his eyes. He needs support for all his daily needs. He is funny, lively, and intelligent, plays x-box with his feet and loves fast cars, chocolate, and meeting people.
Cain and his PA, Helen, are offering a free session to all schools. Their aim is to increase awareness of living with disabilities and to teach the importance of inclusion, equality and engaging meaningfully with people with disabilities. The session will give pupils an insight into the challenges Cain faces in his daily life, how he communicates and show how much he has to offer society. It includes several practical activities. Feedback from schools who have taken part has been very positive:
‘A number of the children mentioned that they now felt they had a better understanding of disability and the challenges that those with disabilities face.’
‘Cain and his whole team were wonderful and really informative, we learned so much and laughed a lot!’
‘The children absolutely loved the session. The length was perfect for keeping them engaged and the practical activities were fantastic’.
