About Us

Rethink Periods is the award-winning, dynamic schools period education programme supporting Key Stage 2 and 3 teachers and school nurses with everything they need to teach about periods.

Rethink Periods provides no nonsense, unbiased information about all period products available, editable lesson plans, all supporting resources and a free demo box for your school, filled with period products for your pupils to get their hands on (worth approximately £200).

They're on a mission to reinvigorate period education and empower young people with information on all period products, environmental aspects of periods, dispel myths and taboos and tackle period inequality head on.

Why is this something being addressed?

Historically, periods haven’t been talked about openly and the consequences of this are far reaching:

  • 1 in 4 young menstruating people did not know what to do when starting their period.
  • Periods are usually not covered in enough depth in schools and information is often highly biased.
  • The conversation has historically been led by the big brands in schools, perpetuating the drive to buy single-use disposable products and keeping young people in the dark about the full range of products on offer.
  • Stigma and misunderstandings are still rife because of misleading advertising, passing down of incorrect information, boys and gender diverse people being left out the conversation.
  • Young people aren’t equipped to make informed choices about products, product disposal, how to manage own menstrual health, how to save money, when to visit a GP, what period equality is, etc.
  • 10% of people with periods cannot afford to purchase period products. 1 in 10 of these has to improvise with makeshift period products.

How does Rethink Periods work?

  • Training is delivered via a two hour online workshop – up to 20 teachers / nurses per training session  (1 teacher / nurse per school).
  • Each school that completes the training receives digital resources including lesson plans and all supporting resources.
  • Teaching resources are available in English and Welsh.
  • Follow up support and peer-to-peer advice is available through our private Facebook group.
  • Attendees complete brief surveys to provide qualitative feedback.
  • Each school that completes the training receives a period product demonstration box with the full range of eco-friendly products, worth ~£200.
